Council Leaders take on Carbon Literacy Training
Councillors and Officers attended Carbon Literacy Training to learn about the effects of climate change and how to take action 🌍
This week, a group of Councillors and Officers at Nottingham City Council attended a Carbon Literacy Training session. Carbon Literacy is climate change learning that catalyses action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on an individual, community and organisational basis. Nottingham City Council has already made good progress to reduce it's own carbon emissions and influence those across the city, and this training serves to support further action towards the CN28 target.
Carbon Literacy Training covers the science of climate change, how it is caused, how it is affecting the planet and our society. It also helps participants to consider how individuals and organisations can reduce carbon emissions, and equips them with the skills needed to lower their carbon footprint within their organisation or at home.
"The course was really helpful in understanding the systematic nature of the challenges around climate change and the necessity of promptly achieving carbon neutrality." Paul Burrows - IT Change, Projects and Strategy Manager
The training was attended by both the Leader of the council, Councillor Neghat Khan, and the Deputy Leader, Councillor Ethan Radford, along with other members of the Council Executive and Officers representing a wide range of council services and departments, from IT to Sports and Leisure.
As part of the training, participants submit pledges to the Carbon Literacy Project outlining how they will take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and receive internationally recognised 'Carbon Literate' accreditation, which contributes towards Nottingham City Councils Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation status. Where organisations have a substantial number of people who are Carbon Literate, it can help to not only reduce their carbon emissions, but also to decrease energy and resource use, which can in turn save money.
"Despite working in sustainability already, I learnt lots of new facts and was shocked by some of the impacts [of climate change] that I had not considered before" Roisin Hickey - Energy Projects Officer
